This is not what I fell in love with.

I have been in the trenches since the Ethereum days. I have never felt it this dead.

Not dead like a bear-market Tuesday, where nothing moves and everyone is bored. Dead like the game itself stopped working. The coins launch, the chart goes up for eleven minutes, and then it goes to zero and nobody even argues about it.

What it used to be

From 2022 through most of 2024 there were a handful of tickers launching a day that anybody cared about. You could actually keep up. You knew the devs, you knew the callers, you knew which wallets were early. A coin that caught would run to $50 million in a day, and that happened every day, for a long time. Not once a month. Daily.

That was the whole appeal. It was a small, loud, degenerate room where attention was scarce enough to mean something. If a ticker got the timeline talking, there were only so many places that money could go.

What it is now

Fifty thousand tokens a day. That is not a figure of speech. Pump.fun alone has been printing 50k to 55k tokens on its biggest days this fall, and through September the launch chart across the pads that actually matter sat pinned between 50k and 70k a day. Pump.fun has now minted 24 million tokens, lifetime.

Nothing holds. A coin that touches $1 million is an event. Half the time they cannot even hold $200k. Nobody even tracks that number, which tells you something, but the closest proxy does: only 2.2% of pump.fun launches this week made it off the bonding curve at all, and for most of the last eighteen months that was under 1%. The ones that do run get sold into by the same 25 wallets that bought block zero, and the chart looks like a terrorist attack every single time.

The attention did not grow fifty-fold. The supply of tickers did. That is the entire story in one sentence.

Want the survivor count? Sharpe tracks 749 pump.fun coins that are still alive enough to track, out of 24 million launched. Strip out the handful that are one controlling wallet pretending to be a community and you are left with 17 real coins above $10 million, 10 above $25 million, and 2 above $50 million. The entire pump.fun category is worth $1.13 billion, which is 3.8% of all memecoins. The biggest coin on the board, Fartcoin, is $128 million and 95% below its high. And look at the names. Every one of them is a 2024 coin. Nothing launched in 2026 has made the list.

Coin

Market cap

From high

Fartcoin

$128M

−95%

AI Rig Complex

$52M

−92%

Jelly-My-Jelly

$50M

−89%

Peanut the Squirrel

$42M

−98%

Alchemist AI

$38M

−84%

Moo Deng

$38M

−94%

Zerebro

$30M

−96%

TROLL

$30M

−90%

NEET

$29M

−48%

The Black Bull

$28M

−85%

Every pump.fun coin above $25 million on October 27, 2026, from Sharpe's pump.fun board, minus the ones that are not real communities. Ten coins. That is the whole leaderboard for a launchpad that has minted 24 million tokens.

<img src="https://joey.money/img/trenches-are-over/tokens-per-day.png" alt="Pump.fun tokens created per day, October 2025 to October 2026.
And it is not one launchpad anymore. The trench radar tracks eight pads worth tracking: pump.fun, stonk.fun and letsbonk on Solana, ponsfamily, long and flap on Robinhood Chain, The Stonks Exchange on Base. For a week in early September pump.fun's share of launchpad volume fell to about a quarter while ponsfamily, long and stonk.fun ate it. By October 24 pump.fun is back to almost 90%, but not because it grew. The challengers faded. Stonk.fun did $16 million that day, ponsfamily $25 million, letsbonk $2.7 million, against pump.fun's $419 million. Every pad gets its own feed, its own callers, its own bundlers, all splitting the same thin attention, and when the attention moves on the pad is just empty.

The vamp problem

Then there is what happens when something actually good shows up. A real narrative hits the timeline, the kind that used to make one coin. Within an hour there are twenty versions of it across three chains. Same name, same ticker with one letter changed, one on Solana, one on Robinhood, one on Base, five more on each pad. Everybody picks a different one, the liquidity gets split twenty ways, and none of them run. The narrative was real. The coin never happens because there was never one coin to buy.

That is the part that kills me. The old trenches rewarded being early to a good idea. The new trenches punish it, because being early now means picking the right vamp out of twenty, and the right one is usually whichever bundle the biggest caller is in.

Who broke it

The bundle kids. The Axiom and terminal crowd running bundlers, launch tools, and sniping setups that buy their own coin across 200-plus wallets in the first block, so the holder count looks organic and the chart looks alive, then dump on the first real human who shows up. Launching a token used to take some effort and some nerve. Now it is a button, and the button comes with a tool that guarantees you win against the people who click the button after you.

And the KOLs. The guys with the public wallet that a few thousand people copytrade. Watch the public wallet and he is "taking losses" right alongside you, which makes him feel honest. What you do not see is the five side wallets nobody knows about that bought first and sold into the copytraders. The public wallet is the ad. The side wallets are the business. He is not down with you, he is selling you the idea that he is down with you.

When every launch is a pre-rigged extraction, the honest buyers learn the lesson and leave. Then the only people left are the extractors, and they are extracting from each other. That is where we are. And I genuinely do not see how new people come in. A new guy's first buy is a coin where one dude controls most of the supply, so his first lesson is getting dumped on. Trading low-cap shitters all day will get you wrecked, and the people doing it know it, which is why nobody is bringing their friends anymore.

You can see it in the wallets. Pump.fun had 129,000 new wallets a day in January 2025. This month it is about 50,000, and three out of four active wallets are recurring. I can almost guarantee those 50,000 new wallets are not new people. They are bots and the same guys multi-walleting. It is the same crowd recycling the same money through more tickers.

<img src="https://joey.money/img/trenches-are-over/daily-active-wallets.png" alt="Daily active wallets on pump.fun, new versus recurring, April 2024 to October 2026.
The money left too

This is my read, not something I can prove: the big players stopped feeding it. The institutions and funds that were quietly in the memecoin trade, and I think the Solana Foundation orbit too, were losing too much and stopped injecting. The liquidity that used to catch a dip at $5 million and send it to $50 million is not there. So the dip does not get caught. It just keeps dipping.

The part I can prove is the volume. Solana did $314 billion of DEX volume in January 2025. This month is running at about $63 billion. That is the whole chain, not just memes, and it is down 80% while the number of tokens competing for it went up. Do the dumb math: roughly $180,000 of chain volume per token launched in January 2025, roughly $30,000 per token now. Six times more tickers per dollar.

Pump.fun itself tells the same story. Weekly volume peaked around $3.4 billion in January 2025. It spent most of 2026 around half a billion and is back to about $1.1 billion lately, on three times the launches.

The biggest extractor is in the White House

I will say the part people only say in group chats. I think Trump and the people around him are extracting billions from this space, and I do not think it stops at insider trading. I think they are manipulating the market. I think he tells friends and family to go long or short before he tweets something, and then he tweets it. Look at the Solana volume chart above. The single biggest day in the history of the chain, $38 billion, is January 18, 2025. That was his coin. The top of the trenches was literally the President launching a memecoin on a Friday night, and everything since has been the comedown.

I lost whatever edge I had in crypto the moment he won in November 2024. Before that, if you read the tape and the timeline better than the next guy, you could win. Now the tape is one man's phone, and the trade is knowing what he is about to post before he posts it. I do not have that, you do not have that, and anyone who says they are trading it on skill is lying to you or to themselves.

The chain tour

We started on Ethereum years ago. Then Solana took it and owned it. Now it is Solana, Ethereum, Robinhood Chain, Base, BNB, Monad and Arc all fighting for the same shrinking pool of attention, with Solana and Robinhood as the two that actually matter.

Robinhood is the newest hope and the fastest disappointment. Robinhood Chain coins are basically all speedrunning to zero. Its pads had their week in September, when ponsfamily and long were pulling real volume, and now they are back to a few million a day between them. Cashcat, the one coin on that chain that had a real narrative behind it, is one of the worst coins I have ever longed. It ran, it got the Vlad tweet, it hit nine figures in July, and it has done nothing but bleed since, down more than 90% from the top. I held through most of it like an idiot.

The chain stats say the same thing. On October 24 Solana did $2.9 billion of DEX volume, Base $830 million, Robinhood $470 million, and the trading terminals, Axiom, fomo, the pump.fun app, GMGN, were pushing a combined couple hundred million a day, down from more than a billion a day at the September peak when Robinhood was half the terminal flow.

The gauge

There is one number that rolls all of this up. Adam Tehc's trench index scores each day's launchpad and trading-bot activity against the last 90 days and the last year, 0 is dead and 100 is peak euphoria, weighted 35% launchpad volume, 20% new launches, 25% bot volume, 20% bot fees.

It sat in euphoric territory, high 80s and 90s, from August through most of September. It is 34 today. Cold. That is the whole round trip in six weeks: the loudest launch numbers ever printed, and the fastest fade I have seen on that chart.

Where I land

The honest version of the data is uncomfortable. The trenches are not empty. They are more crowded than they have ever been. More launches, more pads, more graduations, and the active-wallet count is up from last winter's low. If you only looked at the launch chart you would call this a boom.

It is not a boom. It is the same money and the same people spread across six times as many tickers, with the new-wallet pipe running at a third of what it was and the whole chain's volume down 80%. That is what over feels like from the inside: busier than ever, and nothing pays.

I am not calling a bottom. Memes have been pronounced dead before and the next cycle always came from somewhere nobody was looking. But the thing I loved was a specific set of conditions: few launches, scarce attention, real money willing to chase. All three are gone at the same time, and no amount of new chains fixes that.

What would change my mind is simple. Launch counts falling for months, not days. New wallets coming back. Coins holding above $1 million long enough to build a holder base. A couple of real runs that start from zero instead of from a bundle. Until then I am watching, not longing.
